IFTTT

IFTTT (which stands for If This Than That – just in case you wanted to know) is the platform formerly suggested by IMS to trigger automatic social posting of your Typepad blog to Facebook and LinkedIn. As with all things internet and social media marketing, IMS’ recommendations have changed. Rather than taking a hands-off approach, we suggest you dig in and GET SOCIAL on Facebook!

  1. We recommend manually sharing your blog post to your Facebook page.
  2. While you are logged in to FB, take a moment to comment on another post,
    1. share the post from your business page over to your personal profile (with your own comment) and
    2. hit like on a few posts (from friends) in your news feed.
  3. Once you become comfortable w/ these new tasks, challenge yourself to comment on a friend’s post – starting w/ a happy birthday or congratulatory type post is always an easy first step if you are not used to commenting.
  4. The more interactive you are, the higher the chance of your posts being seen by others.

Finally, if you prefer to avoid being social, it’s important to be aware that on occasion (e.g., every time Facebook rolls out an update, you change your password, you login from a new device, you login from another device, you login from a different IP address, you allow a new third-party app access to your account, or just for the heck of it) the connection between your blog and your social accounts can break. To re-establish the connection (or to integrate other social platforms), follow the instructions below.

If these instructions do not work, please reach out directly to IFTTT for support at https://help.ifttt.com/hc/en-us.

To Fix a Current Applet:

  1. Login to your IFTTT account here: https://ifttt.com/login?wp_=1
  2. Select “My Applets” from the top navigation
  3. See the status of each of your Applets on the lower left of each Applet
    1. Green means the Applet is on and working
    2. Red means the Applet is off and not working
  4. Select the Applet that is not working
    1. Once there you can see at the bottom when the Applet last ran and how many times it has been triggered
  5. Select “Check Now” to test the Applet to determine where the error is
  6. Select the “Settings” wheel in the top right to configure the Applet
    1. Ensure that the blog feed is correct (i.e. your blog’s URL)
    2. Ensure that your social media account is connected and triggering
  7. Save the Applet

To Create a New Applet:

  1. Login to your IFTTT account here: https://ifttt.com/login?wp_=1
  2. Select “My Applets” from the top navigation
  3. Select “New Applet” on the right of the page
  4. Select the text “+this” to select your triggering service (i.e. your blog rss feed, event, etc.)
  5. For blog Applets select “New feed item”
  6. FOR TYPEPAD USERS ONLY: Insert the URL of your blog (make sure to add /atom.xml to the end of your URL to make it an RSS feed) and Create Trigger
    1. EX: blog.domain.com/atom.xml
  7. Select the text “+that” to select you action service (i.e. your social media platform)
  8. Select Connect and Authorize and Login to your account
  9. Select the action you like
    1. Ideally a new post, update, tweet, etc.
  10. Create Action
  11. Uncheck to receive notifications when the Applet runs (unless you REALLY want to know every time your Applet is triggered)
  12. Click Finish

You can expand your use of IFTTT beyond just social media posting. Don’t hesitate to experiment with the various Applets they already have or create your own using the process above!
